Nel suo ultimo racconto Mille pagine, pubblicato su Aletheia - A Journal of Literary and Linguistic Studies¹, Gianluca Piattelli ci presenta uno scrittore che si è ritirato in solitudine, in una casa immersa nella natura, convinto che l’isolamento possa rigenerare la sua creatività e permettergli di scrivere un grande romanzo di mille pagine:

Mille pagine, avrei voluto scrivere, mille e una notte avrei voluto reinventare. Desideravo dare alla luce non una storia come tante ma una storia che andasse oltre il già raccontato. Una storia che parlasse di tutto, poiché partorita nell’assenza di rapporti umani. Grembo solitario.

Dopo alcuni giorni passati lavorando intensamente sul suo progetto, durante una passeggiata nel bosco gli capita di attraversare una sorta di varco magico creato temporaneamente da due castagni. Si ritrova cosi in un mondo artificiale di plastica, privo di vita.

Era un insieme di alberi palesemente finti, si capiva dai fusti dritti, tutti uguali, senza sfumature di colore. Il sentiero pareva disegnato, idem per il cielo sopra di me. Nessun odore, né suono. Mi chinai a toccare l’erba, un tappeto che si ripeteva identico come un panno da biliardo.

Plastica.

Anche le foglie basse degli alberi avevano una consistenza simile. Ne sfiorai alcune ed erano senza vita, né turgore. Perfino il sottobosco pullulava di oggetti ricreati a imitazione. Funghi di gomma tentai di cogliere, ma il suolo li tratteneva a sé. Provai a piegare rami che rimanevano rigidi, a strappare foglie che restavano attaccate, a scavare il suolo che rimaneva intatto.

Sollevai lo sguardo e, nel celeste perfetto del cielo tra le fronde, intuii l’immobilità del tempo

In questo mondo artificiale, lo scrittore trova un manoscritto, di cui legge l’incipit, rimanendone affascinato.

Meraviglioso.

Mi era capitata fra le mani una grande storia, come quella che avevo intenzione di scrivere.

Decise allora di appropriarsene per presentarlo come suo al suo editore.

L’editore lo rifiuta però molto lapidariamente:

Manoscritto rifiutato. È Intelligenza Artificiale. Banalità e standard narrativi. No sentimento. No emozioni. Il nostro rapporto è da considerarsi chiuso.

La decisione finale dello scrittore è altrettanto ferma e perentoria:

Buttai le penne, i quaderni e ogni altro aggeggio che mi ricordasse la scrittura. Avevo smarrito l’immaginazione.

Leggendo questo racconto, mi è venuto spontaneo chiedermi chi abbia sbagliato nel giudicare il manoscritto: lo scrittore o l’editore? (Il racconto ha sollevato anche altri interrogativi, ma qui affronterò solo questo). Lo scrittore definisce il manoscritto come “meraviglioso” e “magnifico”; l’editore lo ritiene senza sentimento e privo di emozioni. Chi ha ragione e chi ha torto? È lo scrittore che, pur dimostrando sensibilità e capacità emotiva (“Parlavo con le foglie appena nate, gli rivelavo i tormenti, i subbugli del cuore, perfino qualche frase che avevo scritto al mattino.”), ha preso un incredibile abbaglio, o è l’editore che, limitato dai suoi preconcetti, dalla sua inflessibile politica editoriale o dalle domande del mercato, non riesce a (o non vuole) cogliere l’importanza del manoscritto e le emozioni che esso trasmette?

L’incipit del manoscritto (che Piattelli ha scritto proprio con il supporto di Gemini, inserendo quindi un reale pezzo di artificialità nella realtà artificiale del racconto) sta lì, di fronte a noi, al nostro giudizio. Non nego d’esser stato affascinato io stesso da quell’incipit, specie leggendo le sue frasi “In queste pagine, l’algebra delle stelle si mescola al fango delle trincee e il segreto della fotosintesi dialoga con l’ombra di Dio” e “ogni impero della mente è stato edificato mentre fuori, oltre le mura del pensiero, infuriava la peste”). Non nego di aver sperato, mentre leggevo il racconto, che l’editore accettasse il manoscritto, decretando così la fortuna dello scrittore. Non nego infine di aver provato un certo sconcerto nell’apprendere che si trattava di un manoscritto prodotto dall’AI, e ancor più a scoprire che lo scrittore―sì, proprio lui, maestro indiscusso delle emozioni e dei sentimenti oltre che del linguaggio―si fosse lasciato trarre in inganno.

Però, quello sconcerto l’ho provato soprattutto perché io, in prima persona, ho provato lo stesso fascino che aveva provato il protagonista del racconto, e non ho saputo distinguere l’umano dall’artificiale.

Non è certo una novità che l’AI ci sappia illudere con il suo linguaggio patinato, liscio, levigato, da vernice di quadri. Non è una novità che le frasi elaborate dall’AI ci lascino a volte senza parole per il modo in cui ci sanno assecondare, soddisfare, convincerci, per il modo in cui sanno persino anticipare i nostri bisogni e le nostre richieste.

Ma è proprio qui che il racconto di Piattelli rivela la sua forza: nel portarci, con grandissima maestria e a nostra insaputa, a vivere in prima persona questa esperienza, facendocela toccare con mano, nel farci stupire delle nostre stesse ingenuità, e nel ricordarci quanto ci sia facile (e costoso in termini di conseguenze) scambiare un’illusione per realtà.

The Plastic Forest of Language

In his latest short story Mille pagine, published in Aletheia – A Journal of Literary and Linguistic Studies², Gianluca Piattelli presents a writer who has withdrawn into solitude, in a house immersed in nature, convinced that isolation can regenerate his creativity and allow him to write a great thousand-page novel:

A thousand pages—I wanted to write, a thousand and one nights I wished to reinvent. I longed to bring forth not just another story, but one that would go beyond what has already been told. A story that would speak of everything, for it was conceived in the absence of human relationships. A solitary womb.

After several days spent working intensively on his project, during a walk in the woods he happens to cross a kind of magical threshold temporarily created by two chestnut trees. He thus finds himself in an artificial, lifeless world of plastic.

It was a collection of trees that were clearly fake—you could tell from their straight trunks, all identical, without any variation in color. The path seemed drawn, and so did the sky above me. No smell, no sound. I bent down to touch the grass: a surface repeating itself identically, like a billiard cloth.
Plastic.
Even the lower leaves of the trees had a similar texture. I brushed against some of them and they were lifeless, without firmness. Even the undergrowth teemed with objects recreated in imitation. I tried to pick rubber mushrooms, but the ground held them fast. I tried to bend branches that remained rigid, to tear leaves that would not detach, to dig into the soil that remained intact.
I lifted my gaze and, in the perfect blue of the sky among the branches, I sensed the immobility of time.

In this artificial world, the writer finds a manuscript. He reads its opening and is extraordinarily fascinated by it.

Wonderful.
I had come across a great story, like the one I had intended to write.

He then decides to appropriate it and present it to his publisher as his own.
The publisher, however, rejects it in a very curt manner:

Manuscript rejected. It is Artificial Intelligence. Banality and standard narrative patterns. No feeling. No emotion. Our relationship is to be considered terminated.

The writer’s final decision is just as firm and peremptory:

I threw away my pens, my notebooks, and every other object that reminded me of writing.
I had lost my imagination.

Reading this story, I couldn’t help but wonder who had erred in judging the manuscript: the writer or the editor? (The story raised other questions as well, but here I will address only this one). The writer describes the manuscript as “brilliant” and “wonderful”; the publisher considers it devoid of feeling and emotion. Who is right and who is wrong? Is it the writer who, despite demonstrating sensitivity and emotional depth (“I spoke with the newly born leaves, confiding in them my torments, the unrest of my heart, even a few sentences I had written that morning”), has fallen into a striking illusion? Or is it the publisher who, constrained by his preconceptions, his rigid editorial policy, or market demands, fails—or refuses—to grasp the importance of the manuscript and the emotions it conveys?

The opening of the manuscript (which Piattelli actually wrote with the support of Gemini, thus inserting a truly real piece of artificiality into the story’s artificial reality) stands there before us, open to our judgment. I do not deny having been fascinated myself by that opening, especially when reading lines such as “In these pages, the algebra of the stars mingles with the mud of the trenches, and the secret of photosynthesis converses with the shadow of God” and “every empire of the mind has been built while outside, beyond the walls of thought, the plague was raging.” I do not deny having hoped, while reading the story, that the publisher would accept the manuscript, thus ensuring the writer’s success. Nor do I deny the sense of bewilderment I felt upon discovering that it was a manuscript produced by AI—and even more so upon realizing that the writer—yes, he himself, an undisputed master of emotions and feelings as well as of language—had been deceived.

And yet, that bewilderment arose above all because I, personally, experienced the same fascination as the story’s protagonist, and I was unable to distinguish the human from the artificial.

It is nothing new that AI can deceive us with its polished, smooth, varnished language, like the lacquer on a painting. It is nothing new that sentences generated by AI can sometimes leave us speechless for the way they accommodate, satisfy, and persuade us—for the way they can even anticipate our needs and our requests.

But it is precisely here that Piattelli’s story reveals its power: in leading us, with great mastery and without our realizing it, to live through this experience firsthand, to touch it, as it were; in making us marvel at our own naïveté; and in reminding us how easy it is for us (and how costly in terms of consequences) to mistake an illusion for reality.
